Railway Bench Restored
A huge thank you to Councillor Richard Brooker who has lovingly restored the Railway Bench back to its former glory!
You may have spotted that the railway bench on the grass near The Swan was looking a bit sad and needed some attention and to reintroduce the Rail Pullman Cream colour.
Richard knew that the job was going to be quite challenging after seeing how much soft and rotten wood there was. However, he likes a bit of a project, and it looked as if the bench would not last much longer if not restored soon.
The two back-rest boards were in the worst condition, with sections of soft and rotten wood which had to be removed. After sanding off what remained of the original paint, he had to glue and dowel new replacement wood into place and then plane it into the original shape.
Wood hardener was applied to most of the boards, as they had been exposed to the elements due to the old flaking paint. Any gaps were then filled with wood filler and the boards sanded again.
The boards then received two coats of primer, followed by a coat of undercoat. Lastly, two coats of top coat in the original Pullman Yellow were applied.
Lastly, the boards were reattached to the metal frame. This was not as simple as it sounds due to the springy nature of the metal frame when not supported by the boards. Each board had to be bolted back into its original position, or it would not fit properly, but once done, the bench became very solid and stable.
With a bit of luck, the bench should serve the residents and visitors of Bampton for years to come.
Thank you Richard!

Emergency Alerts
The new Emergency Alerts service is now live. The system
will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at
risk in an emergency. The service will be used to warn you about
life-threatening emergencies such as severe flooding.
Emergency Alerts are messages sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones when there’s a danger to your life, health or property in the area you’re located. They don’t need your location or phone number. Only the government and the emergency services can send them. If you don’t have a mobile, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.
If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to respond. You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine too.

Somerset Sight
Somerset Sight was founded in 1919 to support people with sight loss in Somerset. Due to the way Devon and Somerset are closely linked with the border snaking around places like Bampton and Dulverton, there are many people who live on the border who would love someone to visit them to chat with, maybe take them on a trip, or help with correspondence.
Therefore, they are looking for people to become a volunteer visitor who might have some spare time, just one hour a week or every two weeks, to be individually matched with a sight impaired person near Bampton or a short drive away. Read the Somerset Sight - we can help booklet for more information.
